God is our defender. I think about how I protect my children, watchful for their safety. God is like that. I watch and attempt to develop their ability to manage risk by sharpening their awareness of where danger lies. Most importantly, I remind them that I will be there for them, regardless of what dangers may come their way. I want them to know I will protect them to the best of my ability. I’ve watched my son navigate challenges at the highest level of confidence when exposed to danger. However, he knows he can rely on his dad at every stage. He is not necessarily isolated from risk or injury, but he can live without a doubt that he’s practiced, planned, and prepared to handle challenges. He knows that I’m present and supportive, and he can call me at any time. We might not be able to call God on the phone, but it’s an exact parallel to living as God’s child. We are children of a Heavenly Father who deeply loves us. We live by faith that He will always be there for us. He will lead, guide, and protect our every step. He knows there will be bumps along the way and can see them all. He knows that disaster, disease, and death might be in our future, but He provides His promise to protect us as we journey home to Him.
