We cannot allow harmful thoughts to gain a foothold and become our reality. We must make intentional efforts to redirect destructive thoughts and promote productive ideas. As a collegiate tennis coach, I had a national champion player haunted by his thoughts and memories. He came from a graphic history of physical, mental, and verbal abuse, which corresponded directly to how well he performed in his matches. He later fell victim to a deadly level of alcohol and drug addiction. When asked about this, he said, “Coach, I abuse substances because I just want the voices and memories in my mind to stop, and I can’t get them to stop any other way.” The trauma unleashed and misdirected on him nearly led to his demise because he wasn’t able to treat it correctly. Coping with harmful thoughts requires intent and mindfulness. It helps when you stepped back from negative thoughts, viewing them like a movie, and then script them differently. You can choose life, choose better, and make the choice to improve to a place one step ahead. You can discover that this critical choice leads toward something positive.
