If there’s a single lesson learned through this past season of my wife fighting cancer, it is that I can extend joy no matter my circumstances. If I look, I can find joy anywhere and accept and extend it to others. I am taking up the mantle of what Jesus does for me and passing it on to others. Whether with unsolicited acts of kindness, willingness to serve, or words of encouragement, I can find joy and continue to fight on.
Despite my wife’s battle with cancer, God gave me the exact verses that changed my perspective. When I felt depleted or deflated, I found opportunities to extend a smile, a word of encouragement, or a prayer that gave a sense of hope to someone else. And with it, I felt my spirit lifting. I felt renewed and received the same sense of hope. I felt joy in the middle of hardship.
Scripture provides a way to hold on to mantras of joy, even though there may not be an exact roadmap that ultimately leads out of difficulty. Encouragement is always available amid disease, disaster, disappointment, or depression. In these same words, Jesus shifts our focus to celebrate moments of joy regardless of our circumstances, reminding us of His presence along our journey. I can be a joy-giver to others, relying on His strength.
