My memory of holding my children delivers a sense of comfort to me. The memory of their small body nestled in my lap brings a sense of relief. Comforting them eases the pain and, even for just a moment, lessens my own grief and distress. Their body answers with a physical release—their rigid muscles relax as the tension within them escapes.
I have so many flashbacks about my children running into my arms. As a boy, my son would play at a fast pace. Speeding out of control by biking, skateboarding, or skiing often brought him pain as the only way to slow him down. My arms were always open to receive him in these moments and restore calm to his body.
God speaks to us in precisely the same way. He is our comforter, the ultimate deliverer of freedom from our pain and brokenness. His embrace is the only natural antidote for despair. He doesn’t merely anesthetize, masking the discomfort for it to return in more fiery and intense ways, but instead He removes it for good. He speaks through His comfort, often using pain and discomfort to slow us down and minimize more pain in the long run.
