As I write, I sit in a region of the world with mild temperatures, clear skies, and a void of the massive trauma of war that rages on in other areas. I recognize the sharp contrast from Ukraine as the war advances. I cannot fathom the volume of pain delivered by such atrocities: sons and fathers called into active duty, civilians subject to the chaos of fighting, and women left to carry the weight of trauma. Worst of all, the unknown lurks in the night as sirens sound and air strikes loom overhead. I can only imagine how life doesn’t make sense amidst war. No matter our circumstances, God does not promise immediate understanding. It is easier said than done, but certainty does not lie in the answers we seek but in God’s presence and deliverance. It is through hardships that powerful testimonies can arise. I heard the testimony from a Ukrainian who said they were thankful for the war because they could share Christ with communities of people who were desperate for peace. One unfailing promise exists in that story that our debilitating seasons, troubles, pains, and sufferings will always bring us closer to God. He is our certainty.
