God provides for us by giving us contrast in our lives. By definition, contrast means something strikingly different from anything else around it. A day baking in the summer heat is put in perspective when contrasted with winter winds driving temperatures below zero. In our smartphone’s camera setting, contrast is the ability to control the fader between light and dark. By sending more light into the lens, it draws out the intensity of color, while sending low light fades color, making the image appear flat or dull. Our prayer life often focuses on seeing God only through what He can provide for us and how He answers our prayers. “I am ill; restore my health,” or “I am poor; deliver abundance,” or “I am sad; bring me joy,” and similar pleas for help. We need to reformat and pivot from asking for things from God out of desperation. God is in our needs as well as our answered prayers. By understanding the importance of contrast, we can see that without hardship, we would not fully understand relief. Without pain, we would not understand pleasure. Without chaos, we would not understand calm. God is in our every need, as well as in every provision. Appreciating His role underscores and reinforces our dependence on Him to deliver us. Our hope flourishes when we trust Him to deliver us from where we are to where we want to go. God has not abandoned us in our hardship but allows it, knowing that this contrast will enhance our love for Him. He provides for us in and through contrast. We can see Jesus in any season of need and feel our hands rest in His.
