And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”
The expectation of a thundering voice is only sometimes the experienced reality of God’s voice. More often, the standard reference to the still, small voice is how we experience His voice. In those still moments in the beauty of a sunset, sunrise, or wilderness landscape, we can sense God whispering messages into our minds and hearts.
Frequently, doubts seep in. “Did I just hear that?” or “Is my imagination running away with me?” The best way to discern is by creating these quiet moments and asking God for Him to whisper. We can only pray with open minds, hearts, and ears. Like any skill, our ability to hear God improves with practice and frequency. Get used to the sound of His whisper.
