Reviewing past wins is a great way to bolster confidence when facing the unknown. One of my longtime pastors, Rick Warren, states the value of looking back: “Remember how far you’ve come, not how far you have to go. You are not where you want to be, but neither are you where you used to be.” God’s might and your experience are an unstoppable combination. The team captain is facing defeat, and time is running out, but he’s been here so many times before. He understands how to manage his nerves, how to use adrenaline to enhance performance and not get in the way, and can draw on his experience to come back and seek victory. I coach my athletes and business networks to soak in the win or loss just long enough to feel the joy of victory or the sting of defeat, learn from it, and then move on. When staring at the uncertainty of any challenge where the outcome is in question, we must call on God’s strength, courage, and resolve that we gained from the experience.
